Who Are We and What Do We Do??

The Tidewater Soil and Water Conservation District is a political subdivision of the State of Virginia. Our District is comprised of the counties of Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex (an area of approximately 600 square miles). The mission of the Tidewater Soil & Water Conservation District is to promote the conservation of natural resources through stewardship, outreach, and education. The District is empowered to develop comprehensive programs and plans for the conservation of soil and water resources, prevention of soil erosion, and improvement of water quality. The leadership of the district is committed to two basic concepts, (1) Local people can best identify and find solutions to local environmental and conservation related problems (2) The District ,through its staff or its cooperating agencies, will assist individuals with their natural resource conservation planning and problem solving.

The District is governed by an 8 member board of directors who serve four year terms and may succeed themselves. Six members (two from each county) are elected by the public in a general election. Two members are appointed, at-large, by the Soil and Water Conservation Board. One of these appointees must be an extension agent. The directors may appoint non-voting associate directors.

Day to day activities of the District are conducted by a staff consisting of a  Conservation Specialist and a Office Manager. Technical assistance is received from the Virginia Division of Soil and Water Conservation and the USDA- Natural Resource Conservation Service. The District maintains a close work relationship with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, Virginia Department of Forestry, as well as other federal, state and local agencies.

Operating funds for district programs and activities are provided by grants and appropriations from state and local governments.

All programs, services, and employment opportunities of the Tidewater Soil and Water Conservation District are offered on a nondiscriminatory basis, without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, martial status, handicap, or political affiliation.
